Malax
Malax is a dynamic community neighbouring the town of Vaasa. It was established in 1973 of the municipalities of Malax, Petolahti and Bergö. The unique archipelago extends 40 km off the mainland, to the outmost islands of the Gulf of Bothnia. Some 550 people of the total population of 5.600 live on Bergö island which is easily accessible by a ferry. There are plenty of opportunities for leisure activities, in particular during summertime.
Malax is one of the richest municipalities in Ostrobothnia referring to ancient findings. At the Iron Age Trail in Storsjön one can study some findings from the iron age (400 b.C. - 1150 a.C.). On the area there are about 40 graves (mounds), of which twenty are to be seen from the trail. Along the trail there are also many stones, in which there are offer pits used when sacrificing. On the area there is an old chalet which is used as a showroom and infostand. Ancient findings have also been find in the archipelago such as stone labyrinths (jungfrudanser) on the island of Storskär.
During the Middle Age Malax was a part of Mustasaari. To Malax belonged at that time also Bergö and parts of the village Solf. In the 19th century Petalax became a part of Malax. But in the beginning of the 20th century both Petalax and Bergö became independent municipalities. In 1973 the three municipalities became one municipality again, Malax. In 1975 they were joined by the northern part of Pörtom to become the municipality we know as Malax today.
